Do you own an old pair of boots that need some care?
The easiest way to make your shoes look better is to give them a good clean and shine. They’ll look like new boots (and you won’t have to go through that hard breaking-in time again).
Follow these steps, and you’ll make your boots look shiny in less than 30 minutes. It’s an easy process and the results are fantastic. Here’s how you can do it.
What You’ll Need to Polish
To make your boots look brand new again, you’ll need a few things first:
◈ Horsehair brush
◈ Shoe polish
◈ Cleaning Cloth (microfiber or old T-shirt)
◈ Welt brush (a toothbrush works well)
◈ Warm water in Cup
◈ Polishing with wax (for a shiny mirror look)
You can use shoe polish from any brand, but it’s tough to beat the Kiwi brand. Be sure to get the correct color of shoe polish for the boots that you want to make look nice.
To clean your boots, it’s best to use a Horsehair Brush. This type of brush has soft hairs that can give your leather boots a smooth finish. There’s no better option to give a smooth shine to your boots.
If you don’t have a brush, you can get a complete set to make your boots shiny. This set includes a welt brush and a polishing cloth. Here is a link to an Amazon store where you can purchase it. Don’t worry there is no extra charge if you buy through our provided link.
When you polish your shoes, it’s all about paying attention to the little things, so you need a welt brush. It’s a tiny brush that can reach small places, like between the top and bottom of a shoe and around the holes for laces.
The Jovitec 3 Piece Kit we talked about comes with a horsehair welt brush. But you can also use a used toothbrush. It’s not the perfect way, but it works, and no one will notice any change in your boot.
For a cleaning cloth, I suggest using microfiber towels. You can also use old T-shirts or socks if you don’t have towels. Don’t use anything that you plan to wear again because it might get stains that are hard to remove.
Get a cup of warm water before you start. This will make sure the polish spreads evenly and gives a nice, shiny look. Got everything you required? Let’s start the work!
How to Make Boots Shine in 4 Simple Steps
➤ Step 1: Remove the Dirt from your boots
First, let’s start by hitting your boots together to get rid of any bits of dirt or mud stuck on the sides or bottom. Use a towel, an old shirt, or even some old socks, and rub over your boots to remove dust.
Maybe it looks like a simple starting point. Dirty surfaces can make your polish look uneven, and you can get permanent scratches on your leather boot. So go for the first step seriously and Clean your boots quickly.
If your shoes are dirty, you can clean them with saddle soap and make them clean before giving them a good polish.
➤ Step 2: Apply the Polish to your boots
Take a soft cloth wrap it tightly on your finger and collect some polish by moving it in small circles. You can also use a Dauber Horsehair brush to apply the polish on your boot. You can see this in the above picture.
Friction will make the polish turn into a liquid, so it can stick onto the towel. If you’re working with old polish, it might take some time, but you’ll be successful in the end.
If you’re using a polishing cream instead of a solid puck, this step is easy. Take a tiny quantity, almost the size of a dime. Add a small amount at first, then start to increase its quantity. Apply polish on one area of your shoe at a time. Start with the front part of your boot.
Rub the wax in small circles on your shoe. Make sure you put it all over the leather. When you put polish on your boots for the first time, they won’t appear shiny right away. The shininess will come later. For now, make sure you’ve applied a few layers of polish all over the boots.
➤ Step 3: Spread the Polish and Buff It Up
Now that your boots have a few layers of polish on it. Now it’s time for the final touch. This step is about making sure the shine is spread properly on your boots, so there are no dark spots left on the leather.
Take your Horsehair Brush and Carefully rub it over every part of your boot. You don’t need to spend a lot of time on this step. Six swipes at each part of your boot will be enough to apply the polish properly.
➤ Step 4: Make Your Boots Shiny
After you’ve applied the polish on your boot and made everything smooth, Now it’s time to make your boot shine!
Take your microfiber towel and dip it in water. Wrap it around your finger and use small circles to shine your boots, just like when you applied the polish. Do this for about 10-15 circles on each part of your boot, and You’ll notice a lovely glow, Maybe it happen even faster. For the shining phase of your boot, The more water you apply the more more shine you get.
How to Make Boots Shiny Without Using Shoe Polish
When I worked at restaurants, I’d quickly make my boots shiny using vegetable oil. But there are some problems with this way. The oil can become sticky after a few days, and your boots will gather more dirt and dust than usual. If you use something like olive oil, it can start to smell bad, and your boots will stink
The top choice is to spend a bit of money on good shoe polish. It will stay with you for a long time, and you can apply it to all your shoes. If you want your boots to be shiny right now and you don’t have any polish, Then you can use vegetable or canola oil on your boots.
Extra Tip: Deodorize your boot
If you want to make your boots feel fresh and clean, try using deodorizing balls or spray. It’s like giving them a spa day!
If you don’t have deodorizing balls or spray, You can use baking soda or coffee grounds. Sprinkle a bit of baking soda inside your boots and leave it there for a while. If you deodorize with coffee grounds on your boots, Make sure they are totally dry. Otherwise, they might make your boots smell even worse.
Put a coffee filter at the bottom of your shoe (or use a reusable tea bag, which is even better). Pour the used dry coffee grounds into the filter and leave them there for a day or two.
